Oasis skips the Sand route entirely and goes through a Sandstorm. Wind lifts Earth into Dust, more Wind whips the Dust into a Sandstorm, and then you add Water. A pocket of water in the middle of a swirling desert is exactly what the game had in mind, and it takes only three merges.
